The following is an elaboration on a Facebook post I shared recently.
It may seem like a lot, but these daily-ish treats for my physical self are fully integrated into my life flow (some spanning decades and others are fairly new) which means they’re automatic at this point and they are what I most prefer and enjoy (or else I’d do / use other things, duh).
Certain things listed will switch up depending on the weather or the season, and also based on what I feel most drawn to in a moment.
Also, if I’m in a major creative flow, I do my art to the exclusion of everything else for a period of time (even my basic needs, AND I DON’T CARE) and then I just get back into my regular flow when that chunk of brilliance is complete.
Here’s the breakdown of what works for me:
HAIR
Currently, I only use conditioner (no shampoo) to wash and condition, and I also use a spray leave-in conditioner and sometimes jojoba oil to seal
Up until last week, I did water-only hair washing / conditioning for about 3-ish months and then got sick of it because it was still not creating the effect I was after. During that time, I combed my hair multiple times a day AND used a bristle boar brush to distribute the sebum evenly, but the build up didn’t dissolve despite my best efforts and eventually it weighed my hair down and it felt sticky and icky and I was like NOPE
Previous to that, I experimented with many things and was shampoo-free for many years.
I had a baking soda wash and apple cider vinegar rinse phase, a washing and conditioning with eggs phase, a New Wash phase (I used all 3 - Original, Deep and Rich), a DevaCurl phase, a tallow shampoo bar phase, a Kitsch rice bar phase, and even a homemade shampoo phase - like real shampoo; not home ingredient stuff - and it turned out amazing
Yes, I’ve also used many conventional shampoos and conditioners over the years and still will when I feel compelled to, but ultimately I’ve just always liked exploring things to see what feels the best
That being said, many things felt great at the time and over time that stopped being the case so I’d be on to the next thing and I’m still not done exploring
SKIN
I bet I have softer skin and smoother feet than most adults
I dry brush my entire body with a long-handled bristle brush (not boar)
I exfoliate my whole body with baking soda
I use coconut oil / cocoa butter / castor oil / jojoba oil and / or tallow butter as body and face cream
I’ve been sunbathing for decades. I don’t use SPF except for what occurs naturally by being carnivore and using the oils I do. The sun is great for the skin and definitely great for your health and well-being
SCENTS
I wear either orange or lemon (sometimes both) essential oil, either directly on my skin or I mix them with jojoba for more staying power
I have sensitivities to most scents, even some natural ones including certain essential oils, and I can get migraines fairly quickly after exposure to colognes / perfumes / air fresheners / sprays / shampoos / creams etc, so I opt for unscented products quite often and love when I find scents that I can enjoy pain-free
‘Jaipur’ Eau De Toilette Spray For Men by Boucheron is a gorgeous, light scent that I’ve worn off and on since 2008, and as long as I don’t use much and I don’t use it daily, I’m not adversely affected
MOUTH
I was lucky enough to have parents who invested in braces for me and I still wear my retainer at night 35 years later!
Tongue scraping every time I brush
Coconut oil pulling every time I brush
I use the softest brush ever
Sometimes I just brush with water (carnivore leads to fresh breath) and other times I use toothpaste for sensitive teeth because I like the taste and feel
I floss every time I brush
I spray lemon juice in my mouth (on my tongue; not my teeth) if I want it even fresher
I used to chew sugar-free gum ALL THE FUCKING TIME for so many years, and being carnivore changed that somehow and I stopped completely - the taste and texture was just EWW
I still carry mints but rarely use them
I just love things tasting / being fresh in my mouth
I get my teeth cleaned once a year
MOVEMENT
I’ve been walking and riding pretty much daily (and year-round) for decades and I don’t consider them exercise / working out because it’s just how I naturally like and need to move
My walks and rides are typically long and frequent, but everything else I keep really short and sweet so that I don’t get bored of it
I do resting squats any chance I get
I do a full-body mobility training following a video (so many gains in my range of movement in all areas) which takes 10 minutes
I do a self-directed mini strength training sesh for upper and lower (10-20 minutes)
There’s an outdoor gym I pass on my walks and if there’s no one there, I’ll hang from the bars for as long as I can two or three times
I do 50 push-ups
I do a few rounds of sun salutations and add a move within it that always cracks my back and once that happens, I’m done (yoga bores me but this series is just a good overall treat)
I do 2 handstands (wall as support although I dont always need it) and I’ve been working on how long I can stay in the position. I’ve done them off and on for years and have not prioritized progression much - I just like being upside down for a bit
I don’t care about the duration of the movements I do, I care about the quality of what I’m doing and I care about improving daily in the areas that feel amazing to me, and I switch things up as I go and evolve
NUTRITION
I eat a natural diet (99% carnivore right now) of mostly beef, eggs, salmon, butter, liver pate, sardines, pork rinds, sometimes goat cheese
Because of the above, I’m primarily carb-free / alcohol-free / sugar-free with occasional exceptions when I desire something and then I go right back to being carnivore
I’ve been on the carnivore path for almost a year and a half and I have become progressively more strict with it just because it feels right and it’s just the natural next step; not because my goal is full carnivore. I tried to keep it loose and reserve 20% of my consumption for non-carnivore things, but they appeal to me less and less as I go further in this direction
I typically fast for 16 hours but sometimes a 24-hour fast hits the spot AND sometimes not fasting for days is perfect
I drink 1-2 gallons of water. I’ve been a water guzzler since I was a teen. I really do LOVE the stuff and sometimes I add lemon juice (not from concentrate) and I always add ice
NAILS
For decades I’ve been all about perfectly manicured nails, regardless of the length. I’ve always loved doing my nails.
If I’m not wearing black polish (my staple), I’m typically wearing clear or pearl polish.
If one or two nails is shorter than the rest, I make all of them short and start again.
I trim my cuticles once a week. Toe nails included.
I top up my nails every day if required, otherwise I put on fresh polish every few days (clear base coat, polish, clear top coat). You would never catch me with chipped nail polish. The horror.
Also, I’ve gotten fake nails 3x in my life. They were fun but the grow out is unattractive so I remove them quickly. Can’t stand that gap!
SLEEP
My sleep is all over the place so I have little to offer here. I love the nightlife and I love daily naps and I also love staying in and getting as much sleep as my body needs. I just go where I’m led and sleep / nap / wake up when I want.
HOME
Our physical environment totally impacts our well-being so I prioritize a minimalist, clutter-free, as-clean-as-can-be space for myself that I’ve been curating for years because it feels so dreamy and so me and no, I didn't always live like this (chaos and clutter was pretty standard in my previous life) and I live solo so I don’t have anyone else’s shit to contend with except Chloe’s litter and barfed up furballs
I love making sure to not leave my home until / unless everything is in place because I love returning to order. I don’t always achieve this but when I do, it’s a great fucking day
OTHER
I use a Shakti mat and pillow. GET THEM! They hurt so good and I always pass out while I’m on them
That’s it for now.
Maybe more to come. Not sure.
