Breakthroughs Aren't Enough (An Essay)

Just like you wouldn’t expect one meal to satiate you for a week,

or one shower to keep you clean for a month,

or one workout to keep you fit for life,

or one deep clean of your place to magically make it so that you never need to clean again,

you can’t expect the inner work to take care of itself just because you had some sort of breakthrough.

There is no ‘once and for all’, remember?

There’s just the progressive cleaning up (seeing through).

And you can’t get to the maintenance part until you’ve dealt with the accumulation.

So yes, it gets ‘easier’ as you chip away at all that you’re not, but you’re still required to do the work each moment of every day, and you will never reach a point where you’re done the work and good-to-go for life.

The work is done for life.

There are always more ways and opportunities to sharpen, to deepen, to expand, to refine.

And just like with caring for your body and your home and your money and your personal dynamics,

you don’t get a free pass.

Ever.

You’re fully responsible for every aspect of yourself and your life, and for cleaning up your own mess.

And…

it doesn’t matter where you’re starting from.

The work is done in the now.

Using exactly what’s in front of you.
