This past weekend I got to live out my very biggest dream ever. I got to be a hottie in an R&B video and I was even given an actual role to play in it!
I'm pictured above post-shoot with Rufus, the artist and recent Art Awards Waterloo Region winner (Mentor Award for his Music Is My Weapon Initiative) who asked me to be part of his upcoming video for the track, "By My Side", which will be released July 1st with the video to follow shortly after that.
Edit: The video was released July 30th and is included below! It gained almost 7000 views on Facebook within just a few days thanks to so much local support, and hopefully the YouTube views will catch up soon enough.
My role required me to argue with artist Justin Credible (below) as he rapped his verse to the camera. It was super fun to yell at a stranger / new friend for nothing sensical. It took about 5 takes and each time I grew more comfortable fighting with him. Although I didn't put any thought into what I was doing (it was all new to me and I just winged it), I'm really hoping the outcome isn't horribly embarrassing. I mean I'm great at giving men a piece of my mind at the club when they cross the line with me, so hopefully my natural skill will shine through in our scene together.
There were A LOT of people at the shoot and I met a number of artists and dancers and it was such a treat being surrounded by all that creative energy. I even baked some Too Good Triangles for the crew because what Mandyland adventure is complete without TGT?
My favourite part of the whole video experience was that all I had to do was be myself (I didn't even need to change my clothes despite bringing enough to adorn multiple hotties) and I just had to have fun doing what I'd already be doing at an actual summer house party with my friends. It all felt so natural. I'm so glad that Rufus needed extra people so that I could bring my girls along!
It really was a magical day because of everyone involved. The whole vibe was just awesome. There was no stress at all. Just pure fun! We even wrapped up earlier than planned because it all flowed so beautifully and easily.
What a gentle way to get a taste of what it's like to be on a camera in that context, which will only make my next time that much easier. Because there will be a next time. I still have a specific look and video in mind that I want to co-create with other artists, and I've had this vision for a few years now.
But I can't get to THAT without experience being in music videos, and without facing my insecurities head on, so what a gift that my first video was as light and fun as this one, and that I got to bring my friends along!
No filter. Just pure happiness and love! Not only did I get to realize my biggest dream ever on Sunday, I got to do it with my beloveds by my side both on and off camera.
Only in Mandyland.
BIG thanks to Rufus for taking this picture of us and for creating such a wonderful experience for everyone on set, and thank you Melanie, Sheena and Bobbi for making my special day even better than I could have ever imagined. Thank you especially for all the ways you each helped me get to the point of doing this. What would I do without each of you? And thank you to Tania for coming to show love and support this morning which gave me an extra boost of super awesome energy.
I am the luckiest hottie in the world to be loved and supported by wonderful friends like these.
Big thanks to everyone on my Facebook list who took the time this week to encourage me when my fears were getting the best of me.
As if I could have done this without all that love.
Oh, love. You are an awesome thing.
