“What is a friend? A single soul dwelling in two bodies.” Aristotle
This picture was taken in 2007 at Symposium Cafe in Waterloo and it was the very first time that my beloved bestie, Melanie, and I ever spent one-on-one time together. We had an instant kinship when we met in an entrepreneurship program that year and since then our friendship has continued to deepen daily.
Melanie is half of who I've become because without her I'd be so very lost in this crazy world and I might not have dared to be so boldly myself like I am through the power of our sacred connection.
My strength of self is in large part because I have a sweet soul in my life who sees me clearly, loves me as I am, appreciates me fully, is a witness to my life as well as a mirror to my soul, and shares the same passion as I do for self-discovery. We are part of a mutual adoration society and are so fully ourselves with one another that it gives us the capacity to be more fully ourselves with the rest of our circle and with the world at large.
Melanie and I can easily talk for hours each day and our chats are still one of the richest experiences of my life. We've had thousands of them I'm sure.
This morning's heart connection was another goodie that washed away the insecurities I was having about my transition away from my highly creative and productive years to a much more relaxed existence. Her words and reminders of who I am, what I've done and how I'm still kicking ass, was just what I needed to heal my misperceptions about all the changes that have taken place this past year.
Melanie's observations are especially powerful for me because she, more than anyone else on the planet, has seen my life, travelled alongside my inner journey, gets me 100%, knows my heart inside and out, has been part of every struggle as well as every triumph, and she still sees nothing but beauty and magnificence throughout it all.
I am truly blessed.
To be understood, accepted, loved, appreciated and genuinely cared for by someone is such a healing gift. Life is such a struggle without these things and our burdens are made much lighter when these gifts are present.
In my experience, it is so rare to find another who sees the world through the same lens that you do, and life can feel pretty lonely until you find that someone who can sing the song that's in your heart.
But once you do, life becomes so much sweeter, much easier to endure, and actually worth sticking around for. So if you have found that someone (be it a friend, lover, family member, animal or other sacred being) that makes you feel right at home inside yourself and gives you just what you need to make it through another day and/or inspires you to be more of who you really are, well that is something worth celebrating, my friend.
Even one true friend in a lifetime is better than most people ever get so if you have it, treasure it. For it forms the fabric of your life.
