A new year doesn't have to equal new goals or pressure to change your life, my friend. It can mean or not mean whatever the heck you want.
New Year's Day is really just another day. Another moment in the blip that is our life.
Some people use it as a marker and catalyst for change, but any and every day is the perfect day for personal transformation and you don't have to make some momentous decision now that the clock struck twelve.
As for me, I'll be marinating myself in my vision for 2018 over the next week or two. I don't start back at school until next Tuesday so I have plenty of time to putter, play, write, plan, consider, release, create, and prepare for what's to come.
So far I've chosen a special word to encapsulate they year I want to co-create with life. I say co-create because I don't believe we are ever fully in charge of what happens to us.
I think life knows what we need and what will serve us better than we ever will, and it delivers the right people and situations (even the shitty ones) that will help shape us more fully into the awesome humans we were destined to be.
That being said, we are not without the power to kick ass in every circumstance that comes our way. We are definitely in charge of our choices, where we direct our time, thoughts and energy, and how we respond to situations and others. That's how we shine despite whatever we may face.
So I've got my word of the year and I've also chosen and written out my "core desired feelings" (made famous by Danielle LaPorte) as my underlying guide in all my choices.
No matter what goal(s) we set, it's because we want to FEEL a certain way, so why not get clear on 3-5 ways you want to feel first, and make feeling that way your goal.
My core desired feelings are succulent, powerful, laser-focused and brilliant. Whenever I feel those things I feel completely on track and in the flow of my life so A BIG FAT JUICY YES TO MORE OF THAT, PLEASE!
And then after you've gotten clear on how you want to feel, make a list of all the things you can do to support yourself in feeling that way. This exercise alone might change what you initially had as your goal(s) for the year if you had any, or give you some direction if you don't.
Last but not least, because I have a whole week and lifetime to fine tune, I made a list of actual goals I have like becoming fluent in French (and exactly how much time I plan to spend daily to achieve that), tidying a space before I leave it (like really learning to clean up after myself BEFORE going on to something else in another part of our home so that nothing accumulates - the DREAM!), doing 12 rounds of sun salutations daily (already on day 7), and a shit ton of other fun ideas in various areas of my life.
Am I super attached to anything on my list? Not really. I saw what happened to French when The Poet & The Butterfly Collection came on the scene (I totally dropped it), so I know that I will probably drop everything when and if THE GREATEST THING EVER (whatever that might be for me at the time) flows into my life, but it still feels amazing to have an ideal vision of my best life and a list on my computer detailing its epicness.
However you choose to live your life this year, I hope it's with heart and truth and in resonance with who you really are and what you really want. And if doing that requires making some new choices, I wish you the strength, the courage and the clarity to do so.
All my love,
P.P.S. If an erotic, poetic, insightful and vulnerable real-life fairytale is your kinda thing, I invite you to explore my soul's offering, The Poet & The Butterfly Collection.
