RANT: DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT SOMETHING YOU'RE NOT WILLING TO HELP CHANGE. EITHER SHUT UP OR DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
Humans, you never cease to disappoint me.
Using the homelessness statistics of your city or country to defend your opposition to embracing refugees makes no sense to me unless YOU have made some effort to eradicate that first problem yourself. Did you care about the homeless before how? Do you even care about them now? This is an issue that keeps you up at night? Really? So what are you going to do about that problem starting today if it bothers you so much? Anything at all? Or is it just a handy cop out at the moment? A quick and easy and measurable fact that helps you avoid something you're not comfortable with or don't agree with.
If anything, the fact that ANY city in ANY country has people living on the streets is something we should ALL feel ashamed of in the first place because there has ALWAYS been enough to go around for everyone and the fact that such an abundant world has yet to figure out and prioritize how to care for its own properly is incredibly sad.
But to deny some measure of safety for others DURING A WORLD CRISIS while you aren't willing to do a damn thing anyway to change the statistics you're sharing, seems illogical. You're using these numbers to defend your position, not because you have a personal interest in actually doing anything to help either the homeless or the refugees in any way. You're making reference to TWO extremely vulnerable groups without seeming to consider there might be a place and a NEED for you in the equation to help soften these harsh realities in our world.
"We need to take care of our own first." is what I keep hearing. You had your chance - a million chances - to do that long before now. You have had daily opportunities every single year. You didn't do it. And right now we're in crisis so first things first.
All I see when those statistics are shared is how much we've failed as a whole in caring for our own. And it's no wonder our world is in the state it's in.
We are not separate, my friends.
We are all humans.
The earth didn't come divided. WE did that.
Babies don't give a damn about race. WE taught them to.
Religion was intended to help bring us closer to the divine. WE fucked that one up.
But what's done is done. We have today and our future.
So instead of wondering how you can keep others out, why not ask yourself, "How can I help?".
