This picture was taken in 2009. This is my dad. And it was right after he showed me the tattoo he got in honour of his four girls. His daughter's initials (M,T,M) for Melanie, Tina and myself, and his love's full name (Linda) surround his Harley Davidson tattoo. My dad had surprised each of us at different times with it and we each cried when we saw it. I was the last to see his tattoo being that I live in a different province, and the girls did a great job giving me no warning before the inevitable eyeball waterfall.
This was a rare visit. What made it extra special was that dad and Linda came with me to see my mom who had been given two months to live (brain cancer) and I got to be in the same room with both of my parents for the first time since I was about a year old, and also for the very last time. My mom passed shortly after.
Tonight dad and I had our customary Father's Day chat and as always he asked how I was doing. As always I said, "Fine". He asked again because he knows I don't ask for help when I need it and so I admitted how things have been since taking time off to heal my injury and now trying to rebuild Too Good Triangles and that I'm currently looking for additional work to help pay the bills.
Dad: "I'm going to head to the bank tomorrow and send you something in the mail. It's the first day of summer. Consider it a summer gift."
Me: "Dad, it's YOUR day. I should be the one giving you a gift."
Dad: "You are my gift."
Tears.
That's my dad.
